GREENSBORO, NC (Sept. 7, 2021) – Mack Trucks will feature its Mack Anthem® model equipped with the latest in fuel efficiency, driver productivity and safety technology during the Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC) annual meeting Sept. 12-16, 2021 at the Huntington Convention Center, Cleveland, Ohio.
The 70-inch standup sleeper Mack Anthem model in booth No. 8037 is equipped with the 13-liter Mack® MP®8HE+ efficiency package, which includes the revised MP8HE engine, the Mack mDRIVE™ automated manual transmission, numerous aerodynamic improvements and Mack Predictive Cruise, boosts fuel efficiency by up to 13% when compared with the baseline Anthem* model.
“Mack consistently seeks opportunities to improve our powertrain technology to improve a customer’s total cost of ownership,” said Stu Russoli, Mack highway product manager. “Our customers require a truck that offers outstanding fuel efficiency benefits improving their ROI, and the Anthem paired with the Mack MP8HE+ efficiency package provides just that.”
The SmartWay-certified Mack Anthem model spotlighted at TMC also is spec’d with extended chassis fairings and factory installed FlowBelow rear axle fairings, improving air flow around the rear axles and together offering up to 2.75% improvement in fuel efficiency.
Mack Energy Recovery Technology is instrumental in the fuel efficiency gains of the HE+ efficiency package. Energy Recovery Technology captures waste energy from the engine’s exhaust and converts it back into mechanical energy, delivering it to the engine crankshaft as additional torque. An updated wave piston design helps burn fuel more completely and consistently than traditional piston designs because it evenly distributes the air-fuel mixture within the cylinder, offering additional benefits. Mack also realized efficiency gains by increasing the MP8HE’s compression ratio to 18:1 and improving the turbocharger and wastegate.
The Mack Anthem model featured at TMC also is equipped with Mack Command Steer, Mack’s highly advanced active steering technology. An electric motor added to the hydraulic steering system reduces driver effort by up to 85 percent and assists driver productivity.
“Driving a heavy-duty truck is demanding on the body and often requires the driver to ‘fight the wheel’ to maintain control,” Russoli said. “Command Steer helps mitigate the strain on the driver’s body while increasing driver productivity and safety.”
Multiple sensors based throughout the truck monitor road conditions, driver inputs and the environment, relaying the data more than 2,000 times per second. The system’s electric motor then applies additional torque as needed to the steering, making it easier to keep the truck on the desired path. Command Steer can even help during normal driving conditions by helping to suppress road disturbances such as surface irregularities or potholes and smooths the steering feedback.
Mack Command Steer also features a return-to-zero function that automatically returns the steering wheel to the center position, simplifying maneuverability whether moving forward or in reverse.
